Why is it so hard to quit?

Nicotine is the substance in cigarettes that causes addiction. It alters the brain chemistry and makes the smoker dependent on cigarettes to function normally. It can take as little as a stick of cigarette to get addicted to smoking.

Because of the addictive nature of nicotine, smokers experience withdrawal symptoms like irritability, mood disorders, anxiety e.t.c when they stay off cigarettes. Several people have been able to successfully quit smoking, by self-determination, behavioral counseling and the use of appropriate medications.
